I was having a laugh about the Australia Post junk mail issue

Seriously - the more idiotic the manoeuvres, the funnier it all gets.

In a nutshell:

When life ran on horse back, sailing ships, and evolved with infernal combustion motors, PAPER MAIL - was the only cost effective way to send communication around the world.

A REAL letter, was a real treat.

But then to compress several hundred years of technology and development into a skid mark on the undies of history.....

Then came the telegraph, then that evolved into automated transceivers - high speed Morse code....

That enabled for some, the ability to send information, with the omission of huge legs of time and distance from the delivery chain.

Along came WIRELESS - the ability to disperse information to HUGE amounts of people - the radio and then the TV etc.. came into being...

Then came the telephone..... and slowly by slowly - these devices moved from special high cost, high priority services and they seeped into the general population.....



Today - even the wino's in the parks have mobile phones.


And these data transmission systems, have more or less coalesced into "The Internet".

Basically "The Internet" has almost totally supplanted the letter part of the postal system.

It's got more radio stations and combined real world and internet only radio shows, in more countries transmitting through it, than you can poke a stick at.

There are more news papers, journals and advertising published online, in as many languages as you can get.

Along with TV and commercial and personal broad casting - there are just staggering amounts of video every subject under the sun.
 
And "The Internet" enables one to contact so many people, and organisations into so many things, via email and web forms etc., 

As the ability to produce, obtain and disperse information - in what ever format that comes in - relative to the PAPER postal delivery service, this is where the management of Australia Post have fucked up badly.

The failure to move with the times, along with doing things that while they generate SOME income, such as delivering JUNK MAIL (and much retail store crap and service centre BS) - it's more akin to putting the organisation on life support, while shooting the current and future customers in the head.



I am not going to aim for absolute accuracy in time, date and services etc.,  but once upon a time, the paper mail came 6 days a week and twice a day week days.

With the cost and time effective inclusion of new data delivery services, where in the sense of immediacy, delivery almost globally, and the cost efficiency of it, would supplant the use of a hand written letter - the paper mail system is almost redundant.


In one sense of the word, the paper mail system "as user software", it is a legacy application.

Australia Post - it's paper mail system is almost redundant.


What makes it truly worse is the idiot transition to "income generators" that piss people off and alienate the customer base.


Junk Mail - Yes it does generate SOME revenue - it fills in the gap, between the lack of letters to deliver and more often than not, nothing to deliver.

But most people don't want the legislated right to shove shit into their letter box, to be enacted and enabled.

It pisses off far more people than it wins over, and it's like a compulsory party - where guests come and leave shit everywhere, and the general effect is that people start hating the guests.

People don't want to visit the guests.

People don't want the guests turning up.

And people want to associate with people, who don't operate like the "Official Guests" do.


So the marvellous insight I had, was that the management of Australia Post are like a bunch of buffoons, tugging on their oars, in the whale boat, while they chase Moby's Dick around in circles at 3K's an hour, when the rest of the world has switched to big diesel engines and they are ploughing ahead at 50K's an hour.

Australia Post:

I am OK with the idea of advertising by post, to a point.

Small business, new operators, community events etc.....

But even those I have little interest in.

I absolutely detest the reams and reams and reams of "just shit" that come via Australia Post. So do most people.

In fact they are fed up with the bullshit from the management of Australia Post.





What most people have to face up too on a daily basis.





I also despise their "Yellow Express" envelopes...

90% of all junk mail, I am NOT interested in and neither is a majority of the unwilling recipients of it.

Few people want junk mail, few people read it and few use it.

At best in a world drowning in advertising, I now refuse all add saturated media, and I only go looking for what I want, when I want or need it.

I am totally opposed to endless snow storm of saturation advertising

This is all that the endless junk mail is - more flakes in an endless blizzard of snow flakes.

I and endless others, do not want it, yet they continue to deliver it.


Yet the management of Australia Post, and their sleazy legalese - don't "get it".

The more stupid things you do, to piss the consumer base off, the less they rehire you.

For instance, if you contact Australia Post by email, or request a reply by email, they rig the game to be that your use of their site, means that you have consented to them selling your details to advertisers.

They even stoop so low as to find out about other companies with whom you may have had a relationship with,  and to email you, about what they are up too.

Now this is outright violation of the principle of communication. It's dishonest.

If people want or need to contact this idiot company with it's incompetent and dishonest management, they have a reasonable expectation that their details as used for that communication will only be used for the purposes of that communication - and not be shared with marketing departments of private commerce.

Further to this, with people CHOOSING to have contact or not, with different companies, is their own business.

For the management of Australia Post, to be asserting that any communication with them, gives them the implied right to undertake what amounts to surveillance networking by cross checking other companies they have commercial relationships with, that the person they are misusing their private information in these investigations, to reestablish a link, of indirect communication with, between the commercial agencies and the person who's information they have misused, is also unethical.

 The management of Australia Post are totally dishonest and untrustworthy.

Sure they can use sly legalese and game playing to prop their position and justify their activities of being able to legally "get away with it" but the fact remains that the customers, are telling them to fuck off - and they are not coming back.

Their forays into spamming and selling peoples email address's off - to commercial sectors, the total exploitation of that relationship, as is the delivery of junk mail - is a total intrusiveness into peoples lives and it's a total abuse of that relationship.

The longer that Australia Post delivers the junk mail, the less people want anything to do with them.

People do not hire people who piss them off and stuff their LETTER boxes with junk mail that just goes straight to landfill.



The average intelligence of the Australia Post manager, is that of someone in the car industry, sending around clowns to do donuts on your front lawn, in order to make car sales.


Sure the odd person will go, "Wow - what a goer - I must buy one!", but the majority of people, as they come home every night to find their letter boxes crammed full of shit, wish that Australia Post and anything to do with it, would just fuck off and die.


Abusing and exploiting the customer and indeed the relationship - by destroying the  good will and implied trust, is called shooting the customer in both feet - thus alienating the entire consumer base even further.

The more the management of Australia Post abuse their position as employees of the community by becoming little nazi dictators, the more the consumers are saying, "Stick this up your arse." while they renew their internet and mobile phone plans, so they can call the courier company and ask for quotes by email - before telling all their friends what a bad, expensive and disrespectful service Australia Post provides.

What shits me about the whole junk mail issue is the sheer stupidity of the people involved in it and the total wastefulness of the entire production chain - from the oil well to the land fill - total waste.

 Hang with this while I take you through the BIG picture of the whole Junk Mail issue

OK -it takes of energy expenditure to GET and REFINE and DISTRIBUTE oil fuels.

So enormous amounts of fuel have to be found so all these people can go about their business's's's  - which as well as running their lives - loads of it goes to clearing out enormous amounts of forest that is not replaced - cleared forever; or possibly for the renewable plantations....

That wood gets felled, all the life in all the trees dies as well - all pointlessly.... and then the wood gets transported to paper mills, not infrequently on the other side of the planet - using more oil and coal for the sparks.

So out of the paper mills come huge rolls of paper, and they go to the printing presses.... and enormous amounts of junk mail get churned out.

Using more oil / fuel and coal for the sparks... to run the mills and make the inks...

Then that gets distributed to all the households, and guess what?

90% of it goes straight in  the bin to landfill.... some may in fact get recycled...



OK now to granularly examine the issues...

 If only 10% of the junk mail was actually produced, for the people who actually wanted it....

90% of the entire forestry industry - they didn't have to keep themselves entertained pissing away fuel and coal for sparks, just to be there - for nothing.

90% of the energy used in deforesting the planet and the plantations did not have to be used - for nothing.

90% of all the native forests and the plantations, did not have to be harvested - for nothing..

90% of the chemicals, power and paper mills capacity - did not have to be pissed away - for nothing.

90% of the inks, power and machinery at the printers, did not have to be pissed away - for nothing...

90% of the time and wages and people time, amongst the entire distribution networks, did not have to be pissed away - for nothing....

90% of all the fuel and coal for sparks, used in the entire process, manufacturing, transportation and the fuel needs of all the people involved, did not have to be pissed away - for nothing.

The entire industry - from planting the tree seeds or felling the trees and destroying the eco systems -through to the land fills or recycling centres...

Is one huge WASTE.

90% of the entire industry in terms of time, effort, resources - wages - the fucking lot - is for NO GOOD REASON.

If 90% of all junk mail is going straight into the bin - then what in the fuck are all you idiots involved in the entire production chain - doing it for?

 I am so totally opposed to the stupidity and the wastefulness of it all.

Granted that IF ONLY the 10% of people who actually wanted it, actually got it - I would not be so fucking vitriolic about the entire issue....

Our whole entire system of commerce has to change.

It means that in this scenario alone, that 9 out of 10 people are just wasting their time, doing nothing productive, that the other 1 in every 10 of them could be doing.

 I view wealth as good health, loving relationships and a nice diversity of good food and a place to live - once the basics have been achieved, the true demonstration of wealth is based upon what you can afford to share with as many others as you can.

Starting with sharing your time, and your resources.

The rise and fall of Junk Mail and Telephone Telemarketers.

Once upon a time when new technology such as VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol - using the bandwidth of an internet connection to make cheap long distance phone calls) and other things came to the fore;

In the calculation of earned income, the ratio of sales to costs etc., became viable enough to turn calling up people for cold canvassing sales etc., into a viable cash earning business model, at first there were a few calls, here and there, and then over time, the plague of calls became incessant.

So the telemarketing industry was born and harassment in your home at dinner time became the norm. No more calls from friends?  No more calls from clients?

No - just calls from fucking telemarketers. Interrupting dinner, interrupting having a bath, interrupting going to bed early.......

Non stop calls from non stop cunts.

People - great masses of them actually - were going fucking nuts and really wanted to kill the telemarketers and their plagues of all day phone calls.

So the Do Not Call registry was created, with it's idiotic and rather spineless registration time - I think it was one year initially.

Now after many people becoming rather upset, at the idiot public servant administration, trying to placate all parties.

On one hand the morons of the telemarketing association are saying "We have a right to call people - and they really like it." - so you have to respect our interests.

On the other hand, the general public are saying about the telemarketers, "If these idiots call us at home in the middle of dinner / having a bath etc., for the 5000th time this year - and won't stop calling us - we wish you to know that we have been  contemplating many methods to assist you in gaining an understanding of the depths to which we hate you." -

"So you twats in the ACMA and all your fucking committees,., hand holding and warm fuzzy hugging etc., and the endless fucking feet dragging, known as the bullshit of respecting the positions of all the parties, had better make it happen."

Well eventually the totally spastic ire of the general public made their all consuming irritation felt, and the people running the Do Not Call registry - were finally getting the fucking message and now the whole issue of placing your number the "Do Not Call" registry looks like it's becoming permanent - it's at 8 years now between signing on and the your number being a NO CALL NUMBER for the telemarketers.

So telemarketers are not popular and rightfully so.


How does the management of Australia Post come into this?

Well aside from the local letter box drops etc., the local Sunday Market, school fund raiser etc....

Where the plague of junk mail really took off, was when the idiot admin of Australia Post, decided the shortfall of letters to deliver was impacting the revenue.

This came about as a result of the inroads that the telephone, FAX's, cars and other means of communication was making - so that people could connect really quickly and bypass the postal system, it's time lags and it's costs, almost entirely for the sending and receiving of data deliveries.

In becoming a COMMERCIAL entity for the delivery of JUNK MAIL, the management of Australia Post basically green lighted the practice for the advertising industry to do it as well.

 So the management of Australia Post, has created the massive issue of every one jumping on the junk mail marketing band wagon - just like the telemarketing industry.

The management of Australia Post have become the Madam of the Telemarketing Whores who have moved into, and taken up residence in your Letter Box.

The only free blowies is the wind taking the junk mail down the street - unfortunately.


But this industry - the junk mail industry - lead by Australia Post - is both wasteful, irritating and unwanted - for the large part.

The lack of self regulation, by providing junk mail as a subscription only basis - has led the postal service, into being the paper version of the telemarketing industry.

The sheer stupidity of the lack of decisiveness, in redirecting the course of the mail delivery service, by propping it on a wobbly crutch, and badly managing it over all, has come to create what we have today - unrestricted junk mail - buckets of it, week in and week out....

It's an embarrassing business asset to have as most people do not want junk mail and very few ever read it....

Most of it is just waste that goes straight to land fill.

It's time to do to the management of Australia Post, what we did to the telemarketers.

Reign the incompetents in.

Contact your local FEDERAL MP today.

Tell them, "This is how it is - get rid of Australia Post shovelling junk mail into my LETTER box."

And remember to get the BIG glad bags and print the labels and send them back to the CEO of Australia Post.

Smart Commerce 
idea that I had.

 The management of Australia Post - and the advertising industry - well I think they are lying about the effectiveness of junk mail.

The general slant they put out is that 2/3rds of people are deleriously happy to get it, when the truth is that 90% of people don't want it.

90% of all junk mail and all of the time, effort, resources, pointless environmental destruction and energy waste behind it- straight from the mail box to the land fill or recycling - where the community is expected to bear the costs of disposal - and the environmental damage.


OK first the pricing:

In taking a middle of the road figure for the average pamphlet to be delivered by Australia Post in all locations etc., - we will say 30c.

That means it costs $300 to get 1000 pamphlets delivered.

90% of them go straight into the bin - that is the cost of the publication, and the cost of the delivery - of say 30c per pamphlet + 30c delivery = 60c

That is say $600 per thousand pamphlets.


At a 10% "read rate" - that means 90% of the $600 has gone straight to land fill.

This out of every $600 spent on making and distributing junk mail - $540 goes straight in the bin.

 To scale it back to one in ten;

This means that 60c out of every $6 may lead to earnings.

An addressed mail out, costs about 70c. Mailing out to the one in ten that do want the pamphlet to be delivered, means that the production and mailing costs have dropped from $600 per 1000 deliveries, to $70 per 1000 deliveries.

Emailing from a bulk list costs almost nothing.

Viewing the weekly specials on the website also costs almost nothing.

For instance, Foodworks - despite their many issues, DO make a rather good weekly specials email that link back to their website, for an "electronic pamphlet".




If all the regular junk mailers - agree to produce ONE regular junk mail delivery, with the front page stating this:

"We have decided that continuing to make bulk mail outs are wasteful and harmful to the environment.

So from now on, we are going to offer direct addressed mail to those who want to continue receiving the regular offers by post.

We are also offering to deliver our weekly specials by email.

Please phone us or or come to our website, and fill out your details, to get placed on the direct addressed mailing list, or to select delivery by email."


Then doing a refresher single page mail out, every six months, well that's like 2c to make and 15c to mail - and it allows the consumers to take notice and sign up....

For those who choose too.

This means that the paper component of the junk mailing system gets dropped to about 2% and the email notices probably go to 20%  - because it's cost effective and the advertising is going to the people who WANT IT, instead of all the people who don't want it.
