Parcel delivery service Sendle in stoush with Australia Post

EDWARD BOYD, The Daily Telegraph

“Post without the office” might seem a clever slogan for a fledgling door-to-door parcel delivery service. So catchy, it seems, that Australia Post has called in the lawyers in an attempt to kill it off.

Even while the marketing line has been put on ice due to a trademark dispute, co-founder James Moody says Sendle is steadily carving into the former monopoly mail delivery market.

Australia Post argues that the Glebe-based Sendle is in breach of its trademark by using the words “post” and “office”.

“We thought (the slogan) was a great way of describing our service ... we are not trying to say we are the post office; we are trying to say we are the opposite,” he told Business Daily.

“Having a trademark opposition to say that Australia Post owns the word ‘post’ and ‘office’, no matter where they are in a sentence I think is a little bit rich.”

Mr Moody says sending a parcel with Sendle is 40 per cent cheaper than the postal giant, cuts down on delivery times and improves convenience by picking up and delivering door to door.

The total distance of parcels delivered since Sendle was founded in 2014 has just passed 100 million kilometres. It employs 15 people at Glebe.

“We have sent a parcel equivalent to 130 times to the moon and back, which I think as a total space nerd from way back is really cool,” Mr Moody said.

Sendle has deals with courier providers around the country who deliver their packages, allowing the business to have a capital-light balance sheet with a low asset base.

“We don’t actually own any of the vehicles ... we are a software company doing logistics,” Mr Moody said.

Sendle estimates its delivery costs are 40 per cent cheaper than Australia Post, making total savings to customers of $900,000.

Australia Post quotes $44 to send a 10kg parcel from Sydney to Perth, compared to Sendle’s $18.75.

“We are really here to unlock big business networks and make them available to small business,” Mr Moody said.

Mr Moody and co-founders Sean Geoghagan and Craig Davis created the business after realising that one of the biggest pain points small businesses have is package delivery, which have unpredictable prices and are time intensive with all of the queuing in post offices.

“We are really pleased, in the last year we have been growing at an average of 20 per cent month on month,” he said.

Sendle is also Australia’s first 100 per cent carbon neutral parcel delivery service, offsetting the emissions from its deliveries by investing in Tasmanian rainforests.

Last Friday Sendle won the Telstra NSW New Business Award.

Australia Post declined to comment yesterday.
