Australia Post set to raise prices for parcels, international letters and other services

AUSTRALIA Post is set to raise prices despite recently revealing a return to profit.
The postal giant is pushing up the cost of various parcels and international letters, and mail redirection, mail hold and unaddressed mail services.

From October 3 customers will pay an extra 10c to $6.25 more for dozens of items.
Australia Post last month announced a huge turnaround in financial fortunes off the back of a booming parcels business, but it claims it needs to take “cost recovery” measures.

It reported a $36 million after-tax profit a year after notching losses of $222 million.

Earlier this year it jacked up the cost of a standard stamp to $1 and introduced two-speed letter delivery.

Spokeswoman Michele Skehan said for most products, next month’s price rise was the first in more than 18 months.

“We know price increases are never easy for our customers and we take the decision to implement these cost recovery measures very seriously,” she said.

“These changes will help us to invest in the long-term sustainability of our network, such as introducing evening parcel deliveries.”

Customers sending most regular parcels within Australia will be slugged up to 50c more, depending on size, while some express parcels will cost up to 85c extra.

Reply-paid parcel prices rise by up to 70c and parcels between country towns will cost up to $1.05 more.

Sending letters overseas will cost an average 19c extra for small items, and an average 75c more for large.

Christmas card discount rates, however, will remain unchanged.

Business mail redirection rises to $84.45 a month, up $6.25.

For other customers, it will increase by up to $2 a month.

Mail hold for consumers will be $1 to $1.70 dearer for the first week, and 35c to 60c more for subsequent weeks.

The business fee increases by $5.50 a month.

Furious clients have already started criticising the looming price increases.
“Instead of putting up the prices yet again on 3rd October, why don’t you fix the service first,” Letitia Heagney posted on Facebook.

“Putting up prices only pushes long-time customers such as I am away to another more trustworthy and cheaper alternative ... I have posted parcels every day with Aust. Post since 2004, but if the absolutely shocking service, breakages, lost parcels continues, I will be going elsewhere.”
