Terrible service.

On January 7th I purchased an item off ebay which I never recieved. 
 
I waited until the 17th without hearing anything, then checked the tracking number which said it was already awaiting collection at the post office. 
 
I proceeded to the post office but was told the package had already been picked up by a J. Smith, which I explained was not me! 
 
The staff told me they could not help me and to call customer service which I did. 
 
They told me the delivery card must have been stolen and then used to pick the item up! 
 
They then said they would investigate and expect to hear from them in 2 - 10 days. 
 
After 2 weeks and not hearing anything I contacted them again but nothing more had been done. 
 
They repeated the same story that it must have been stolen and they couldn't help me, suggesting the sender was still responsible for it and he would have to apply for compensation! 
 
He's already done his part and been compensated when I paid him, I'm the one who needs to be compensated! 
 
I would have thought once the item was safely at the post office it would be Australia Posts responsibility and they would have had procedures in place to insure this sort of thing didn't happen (like maybe checking id's) but apparently not! 
 
Now I don't know if I need to go to the police or the ombudsman, the customer service team have been zero help!
